This past weekend I slipped on another one of my hats (children’s choirs coordinator) and attended Church Music Georgia, a music conference hosted by the Georgia Baptist Convention, held at Briarlake Baptist Church in the Northlake Mall area of Atlanta. To be a part of a gathering of like-minded musicians is a wonderful experience – to be savored and enjoyed, to share experiences and glean new, helpful information. This weekend was especially enjoyable as we had the opportunity to hear the Georgia Baptist All-State Chorus and Orchestra in concert on Saturday afternoon. For ninety minutes, 180 high school students sang and performed some of the most beautiful music that I’ve had the privilege of hearing in a long time.
This organization is an all-volunteer, auditioned group made up of high school students from all over the state of Georgia. Rehearsing this past spring, the final rehearsals were held at Brewton-Parker College in south Georgia on June 18-19, and the choir went on tour June 20, traveling to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, singing at various venues in these locations during the week that followed.
Our concert on Saturday was a reunion concert for the group, many of them driving on Saturday morning to Atlanta from all over the state just for the opportunity to sing together again. So many times these days you only hear about how American youth is going in the wrong direction. Well, I’m here to tell you that, with youth like these, our nation has hope for the future!
Bravo to each and every participant! You were truly a blessing to us all!
