The next section of video clips is from our Singspiration 2007. Each student chose a song or songs to play that audience members could sing or, at least, hum along with them as they played. What thrilled me about this portion of our program was the fact that, if you listen closely, you can actually hear members of the audience singing along on various selections with my students. I loved having audience participation!

Justin and Ruth played two pieces chosen from the accompaniment portions of Simply Music, Levels 1 and 2. Justin’s choice, “The Star Spangled Banner” is quite complex for a student of only 9 months, requiring both hands playing multiple chord changes. As part of Simply Music’s accompaniment selections, Justin has learned the first half of “The Star Spangled Banner” and will learn the remainder in the ensuing levels.
Ruth chose a favorite hymn, “Amazing Grace”, and stated very clearly to me at her last lesson that she wanted everyone to sing both first *and* last verses. It’s amazing to me that a young girl of only 8 years could play so confidently and so well, accompanying an audience of approximately 50+ people, with only 9 months of lessons under her belt.

I hope you enjoyed their performances as much as I did. For some of these students, this year has been an adventure in music, progressing further than I have ever had students progress in one year’s time. For some students, this year was a challenge to stay focused and motivated due to outside circumstances beyond their control. Several were challenged in being involved in so many outside musical activities. Yet, I can honestly say that I am proud of each and every one of them and the progress they made this year, and I look forward to next year!
