I read an interesting article today about enhancing your well-being through purposeful mental training such as that done by Buddhist monks in Tibet.

Written by Brian Maffly of the Salt Lake Tribune, it is a fascinating look into current scientific research done by Communications Psychology professor Richard Davidson of Madison University, using the latest technology such as magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, to document the startling control the monks demonstrate over their emotional states.  His resulting ideas about “neuroplasticity” — the notion that we can enhance brain function through purposeful mental training — threaten to upend conventional psychoterapy, which has little scientific basis.

Davidson is quoted as saying:

“We were all taught that the brain is different from other organs in the way it changes over time.  We thought the process was one of irrevocable death,”  Davidson said.  “We now know that view is definitely wrong.  The brain is capable of generating 7,000 to 9,000 cells a day.”

Recruited by the Dalai Lama, monks who participated in this study had spent, on average, 34,000 hours in intense meditation and were considered masters of the faith.   By using scans that tracked brain function, Davidson was able to track high levels of activity in the areas of the brain associated with emotional well-being.   Further studies documented measurable changes in brain activity after two-week sessions of mental training.

The most interesting part of this article for me is directly related to music.  Davidson states,  The brain is the only organ designed to change in response to experience.   Musical training changes the structure of the brain and when it begins earlier in life the greater the influence. (emphasis mine)

I love hearing what parents have to say about Kindermusik!  After all, I’m biased – I know that it’s the very best early childhood music and movement curriculum there is!  And I know that it’s *so* much more than just music.

But to hear what a parent has to say – well, that’s a glimpse into the other side of the equation in the Kindermusik classroom – the parent and their participation in class, too.

This article by Beth Britton in Clarkesville Online shares all this, but also points out another big plus for Kindermusik parents – the Kindermusik community of other parents that are right there with you in the classroom.

Read what this mom from Clarkesville, Tennessee had to say about Kindermusik and the eye-opening insight she received about her own daughter while in the classroom.   Where would we be without the free thinkers of this world?  Your child *just* might be one of them!

It’s not too late to register for our upcoming Kindermusik semester which begins *next* Saturday, January 24th.    We’ll be singing Mother Goose rhymes, walking along with a dog named Rover, visiting “Cities – Busy Places, Friendly Faces” as well as playing the “Rhythms of the Land”.  Come join us!

Looking ahead to 2009, we are pleased to offer an exciting line-up of Kindermusik classes with our new semester beginning Saturday, January 24th.  We have something for everyone at Masterworks Studio!

Village – Ages Newborn to 18 months

Hickory, Dickory, Tickle, and Bounce   hickorydickory-sm

Research shows the more you expose your baby to nursery rhymes and songs, the stronger those emerging language-learning skills will be. That’s why these Mother Goose-like stories and rhymes are the main theme of this class. Plus, you’ll develop research-proven communication strategies with your child through listening activities, speaking “parentese,” and sign language.

Home Materials: CD of beautifully arranged nursery rhyme and songs from class, a rhyming picture board book—Hickory, Dickory, Tickle, and Bounce, a set of Art Banners, and an instrument for music-making at home.

rhythm-smThe Rhythm of My Day

This class will help you bring more rhythm and routine to your baby’s day, as well as help develop lasting learning skills. We’ll show you how and tell you why music can help your little one soothe into the day’s schedule and help build a strong body and mind network for learning. You can bring home those same stress-free play and relaxation techniques from class, and incorporate them into your daily routines.

Home Materials:CD of beautifully arranged songs from class, The Rhythm of My Day—a  colorful picture board book with class themes, a set of Art Banners, and an instrument for music-making at home.

Fiddle Dee Dee  Fiddle Dee Dee Home Materials

We’ll meet many animal characters in our books, activities, and songs—each specifically chosen for a toddler’s emerging interests and physical skills. With silly, bumpy lap bounces, we’ll help toddlers develop rhythm while further developing their ever-emerging language skills. With a special stringed instrument emphasis in the music from class, parents can bring home the violin, cello, and orchestra sounds to help their toddlers stay happy and engaged learners at home, too.

Home Materials: Two Books—This Little Piggy Played the Fiddle and Animal Serenade, Two Home CDs, Kindermusik-exclusive fiddle sticks, and a Home Activity Book—all arriving in a cute, play-storage box that is environmentally safe and recyclable.

Imagine That – ages 3 – 5 years

Cities! Home MaterialsCities! Busy Places ~ Friendly FacesIn this unit, sidewalks, elevators, skyscrapers, and world-traveling photographers are the theme. Learning through the pretend play that preschoolers adore, we’ll be rhythmically busy playing storytelling games and handcrafting city “buildings” from wax paper at home so we can make a cityscape in class! Plus every activity has some at-home adaptations so the parent can take part in the learning. With a pair of resonator bars as a featured instrument, and a multicultural, jazzy collection of music, preschoolers will develop the social and intellectual skills they’ll need in school.

Home Materials:

Two books—Razupazu Toto and Down Our Street, Cities! Game Board Set, Two Home CDs—collection of multicultural and jazzy music heard in class, Family Activity Book, and a pair of Kindermusik resonator bars with mallets as the featured instrument.

ABC Music & Me – ages 4 – 6 years

This semester we are offering three 5-week units of ABC Music & Me in our studio for the preschool set.

Rhythms of the Land – Rhythms of the Land

In class we’ll explore the rhythms and sounds of Native American music. As we investigate, compare, and contrast a wide variety of drums and the materials they’re made from, your preschooler develops the investigative vocabulary needed in the sciences. When you repeat rhythm patterns at home and share the activities in your Home Kit, your child gets an early start in math, too.

Home Kit: Jingle Stick instrument, Home CD, and magazine-style Family Guide (includes the class story Pedal Pump, Pedal Pump)

Under the Rainbow

Under the Rainbow – Keep your eyes open for a rainbow this month.   In class we’ll explore the concept of high and low sounds with Irish music, tricky leprechauns, and the colors of the rainbow.   We’ll also match sounds with pictures, and match pictures with the written words to build lasting literacy skills.   With more activities sprinkled throughout the story in your Home Kit, you and your preschooler can practice together the skills needed now and later in school.
Home Kit: Home CD and magazine-style Family Guide (includes the class story Under the Rainbow)

Dance with Me

Dance with Me

This month, we’ll feature the music and dance of “one-two” rhythms and “one-two-three” rhythms.   In class, we’ll hear real instruments from the ballet and learn a few dance steps, too. Activities like dance, where your child follows a short sequence of instructions, helps to strengthen memory and his ability to follow directions.   At home, play the CD in your Home Kit and let your preschooler show you a new step or two.

Home Kit: a pair of lumi stix, Home CD, and magazine-style Family Guide (includes the class story Dance of Our Own)

Wondering How You Can Afford Kindermusik Classes?

Think you can’t possibly afford Kindermusik classes for your child?

Masterworks Studio is pleased to offer a Payment Plan to fit just about any budget.

Enroll your child by December 16th with a $75 deposit, and take advantage of our Payment Plan by spreading your payments out from January through April.  Each month’s payment for the first child will be only $38.75,  beginning January 16, 2009.

Take two, three or even four months to pay for the 15-week semester!

Depending on which plan you choose, payments range from $38.75 to $77.50.  We believe so passionately in the power of Kindermusik that we want every child to be able to participate.  Details are available on our Class Schedule

Priority Registration for returning families is currently underway.  Open Registration begins December 16th.  Act now to get the class of your choice.

Kindermusik families currently enrolled receive a Priority Registration discount by having first choice of classes for the next semester as well as $10 off tuition, if registered by December 15th.  They will receive a Priority Registration discount code in their class email this week.  Returning families choosing to use the Payment Plan will have the discount taken off the total tuition, thereby further reducing the amount of their monthly payments.

Early Birds can register by January 3, 2009, and take $5.00 off tuition by using the discount code: EarlyBird31278, redeemable immediately with full registration, and, using the Payment Plan, is taken off of the final payment.

Have more than one child to enroll?  Not a problem!

Do you know someone who would be interested in Kindermusik for their child?  With our Tell-a-Friend Referral Bonus, you earn $10 tuition credit for every paid referral that lists you by name.  These referral credits will be taken off of the last payment for the semester or applied to the next semester, whichever you prefer!

worried woman

“I’d really like to enroll my child in your classes, but how can I afford it?”

“With gas prices so high, I don’t know how we’d pay for the classes!”

Sound familiar?

I know I’ve had similar thoughts in my head before when my own children were small.  I’ve even had similar thoughts recently!

As a mother of five children, I am very familiar with how tight finances can be.  Because I believe so passionately in Kindermusik and what it can provide for a child, Masterworks Studio now offers a Payment Plan for just about any budget.  Of course, full payment with enrollment is always gladly accepted!  🙂

Masterworks Payment Plan

For our Payment Plan, the following options are available:

  • Option A: $75 Deposit with Enrollment, Balance by the first class in August.
  • Option B: $75 Deposit with Enrollment; Balance split into two payments: 1st payment due by the first class in August and the second payment due by 9/16/08.
  • Option C: $75 Deposit with Enrollment: Balance split into three payments; 1st payment due by the first class in August; second and third payments due by 9/16/08 and 10/16/08.
  • Option D: $75 Deposit with Enrollment; Balance split into four payments: 1st payment due by the first class in August, second, third, and fourth payments due by 9/16/08, 10/16/08, and 11/16/08.

Regardless of which option  you choose, an initial $75 deposit for your child’s home materials is required, and the first installment is due by the date of your child’s first class in August.

In some instances, due to later registration, this might result in the home materials deposit and the first installment being due and payable at the same time.  The earlier your registration is received, the further you can stretch your payments – even over five months – from July to November!

Wonder how that translates to real dollars?

For a child enrolled in any Village, Our Time, Imagine That, or Family Time class, the remaining cost of tuition after the $75 deposit is $155.  Split into two payments, that’s $77.50.  For three payments, it’s $51.67.  And spread out over four installments, it’s only $38.75 each time – less than $10 a week each month!

For Young Child students, due to hour-long classes, after subtracting the deposit, the remaining balance is $195 – resulting in two payments of $97.50, three payments of $65.00, or four payments of $48.75 – which is less than $12 a week each month for an hour-long lesson!

And, as always, siblings receive a 10% tuition discount (or more for additional siblings) which results in an even lower monthly figure for their tuition!

For questions about which plan will work best for your situation, do not hesitate to contact us at info at masterworks-studio.com or call 404.395.5247.  We are always happy to work with any family to make Kindermusik possible for their child.

“Thank you” seems too simplistic a way to express my gratitude to the many friends, Kindermusik families, and complete strangers who have left messages on my answering machine, emailed, sent cards, or brought food to our family in the past week.  We have been blessed with many wonderful people who have come alongside us and held us up when we didn’t think we could keep going.  We are very grateful, and you have our heartfelt thanks for your support.

Due to the homegoing of our beloved Granny Lou, I have been unable to post next semester’s schedule on my website, but it will be up in the next day or so.  Current Kindermusik families will be given first choice of classes in our Priority Registration which begins December 5th.  Information on specific classes as well as registration information will be available on this Wednesday, December 5th.  Open registration for all classes will begin December 19th.

Through the years, in times of deepest grief or anguish, music has always been my lifelong companion and friend that was there with me, sustaining me.  I have listened to many different favorites over the past week, and it has helped.  I received this video tonight from a Youtube friend and thought I would share it with everyone in hopes that it gives you almost three minutes of enjoyable, restful listening and viewing as it did me.  Enjoy!
