I read an interesting article today about enhancing your well-being through purposeful mental training such as that done by Buddhist monks in Tibet.

Written by Brian Maffly of the Salt Lake Tribune, it is a fascinating look into current scientific research done by Communications Psychology professor Richard Davidson of Madison University, using the latest technology such as magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, to document the startling control the monks demonstrate over their emotional states.  His resulting ideas about “neuroplasticity” — the notion that we can enhance brain function through purposeful mental training — threaten to upend conventional psychoterapy, which has little scientific basis.

Davidson is quoted as saying:

“We were all taught that the brain is different from other organs in the way it changes over time.  We thought the process was one of irrevocable death,”  Davidson said.  “We now know that view is definitely wrong.  The brain is capable of generating 7,000 to 9,000 cells a day.”

Recruited by the Dalai Lama, monks who participated in this study had spent, on average, 34,000 hours in intense meditation and were considered masters of the faith.   By using scans that tracked brain function, Davidson was able to track high levels of activity in the areas of the brain associated with emotional well-being.   Further studies documented measurable changes in brain activity after two-week sessions of mental training.

The most interesting part of this article for me is directly related to music.  Davidson states,  The brain is the only organ designed to change in response to experience.   Musical training changes the structure of the brain and when it begins earlier in life the greater the influence. (emphasis mine)

Demo Days

Due to low registrations and the extreme weather we’ve had in the past two days, the *free* Kindermusik classes that were scheduled for Saturday, January 17th, have been cancelled.  We will re-schedule them at a later date in the next few weeks.

I love hearing what parents have to say about Kindermusik!  After all, I’m biased – I know that it’s the very best early childhood music and movement curriculum there is!  And I know that it’s *so* much more than just music.

But to hear what a parent has to say – well, that’s a glimpse into the other side of the equation in the Kindermusik classroom – the parent and their participation in class, too.

This article by Beth Britton in Clarkesville Online shares all this, but also points out another big plus for Kindermusik parents – the Kindermusik community of other parents that are right there with you in the classroom.

Plus, you’ll develop research-proven communication strategies with your child through listening activities, speaking “parentese,” and sign language.

Imagine That – ages 3 – 5 years

Cities! Home MaterialsCities! Busy Places ~ Friendly FacesIn this unit, sidewalks, elevators, skyscrapers, and world-traveling photographers are the theme. Learning through the pretend play that preschoolers adore, we’ll be rhythmically busy playing storytelling games and handcrafting city “buildings” from wax paper at home so we can make a cityscape in class! Plus every activity has some at-home adaptations so the parent can take part in the learning. With a pair of resonator bars as a featured instrument, and a multicultural, jazzy collection of music, preschoolers will develop the social and intellectual skills they’ll need in school.

ABC Music & Me – ages 4 – 6 years

This semester we are offering three 5-week units of ABC Music & Me in our studio for the preschool set. 

Rhythms of the Land – Rhythms of the Land

In class we’ll explore the rhythms and sounds of Native American music. As we investigate, compare, and contrast a wide variety of drums and the materials they’re made from, your preschooler develops the investigative vocabulary needed in the sciences. When you repeat rhythm patterns at home and share the activities in your Home Kit, your child gets an early start in math, too.

Under the Rainbow

 

Under the Rainbow – Keep your eyes open for a rainbow this month.   In class we’ll explore the concept of high and low sounds with Irish music, tricky leprechauns, and the colors of the rainbow.   We’ll also match sounds with pictures, and match pictures with the written words to build lasting literacy skills.   With more activities sprinkled throughout the story in your Home Kit, you and your preschooler can practice together the skills needed now and later in school.

Dance with Me

Dance with Me

This month, we’ll feature the music and dance of “one-two” rhythms and “one-two-three” rhythms.   In class, we’ll hear real instruments from the ballet and learn a few dance steps, too. Activities like dance, where your child follows a short sequence of instructions, helps to strengthen memory and his ability to follow directions.   At home, play the CD in your Home Kit and let your preschooler show you a new step or two.

Wondering How You Can Afford Kindermusik Classes? 

Financial Aid

Think you can’t possibly afford Kindermusik classes for your child? 

Masterworks Studio is pleased to offer a Payment Plan to fit just about any budget. 

Enroll your child by December 16th with a $75 deposit, and take advantage of our Payment Plan by spreading your payments out from January through April.  Each month’s payment for the first child will be only $38.75,  beginning January 16, 2009.

Take two, three or even four months to pay for the 15-week semester!

Depending on which plan you choose, payments range from $38.75 to $77.50.  We believe so passionately in the power of Kindermusik that we want every child to be able to participate.  Details are available on our Class Schedule

Priority Registration for returning families is currently underway.  Open Registration begins December 16th.  Act now to get the class of your choice.

Discounts

Kindermusik families currently enrolled receive a Priority Registration discount by having first choice of classes for the next semester as well as $10 off tuition, if registered by December 15th.  They will receive a Priority Registration discount code in their class email this week.  Returning families choosing to use the Payment Plan will have the discount taken off the total tuition, thereby further reducing the amount of their monthly payments.

Early Birds can register by January 3, 2009, and take $5.00 off tuition by using the discount code: EarlyBird31278, redeemable immediately with full registration, and, using the Payment Plan, is taken off of the final payment.

Have more than one child to enroll?  Not a problem!

Siblings receive a 10% tuition discount for the second child and 20% off tuition for the third child.  The Sibling Discount applies to multiple children enrolled simultaneously in classes, even if they are in different classes or age levels.

Do you know someone who would be interested in Kindermusik for their child?  With our Tell-a-Friend Referral Bonus, you earn $10 tuition credit for every paid referral that lists you by name.  These referral credits will be taken off of the last payment for the semester or applied to the next semester, whichever you prefer!

I am *SO* thankful for so many things this year –

for a loving husband of 34 years who fell in love with me 39 years ago and was willing to wait for me to graduate from high school and for him from college before we got married (we were friends before we were actually *interested* in each other),
for five beautiful, wonderful children and the extra-special blessing this year of a daughter-in-law who adores my son,
for an “adopted” daughter who has learned to believe in herself and also to say “I love you” and give terrific hugs,
for a sister who is a breast cancer survivor,
for a brother who is a cancer warrior just now,
for an aunt who is like no other, and we wouldn’t have her any other way (those of you who know Aunt Betty know what I mean),
for being able to stay in touch with my niece & nephew and my great-nieces through Facebook,
for renewed insurance eligibility for our daughter, Sara, (Thank You, LORD!)
for godly, loving friends who know all my faults (well, most of them) and love me anyway,
for a warm, loving, PRAYING body of believers who are willing and ready to stand in the gap for anyone in need of prayer,
for the awesome privilege of playing my flute for God’s glory each Sunday morning in the worship service at Zion,
for the joy of working with young children and their parents in my Kindermusik classes – it renews me each and every day to sing and dance with them,
for the blessing of sharing music with my piano students and instilling in them the belief that they are only limited by how self-disciplined or self-motivated they are or are not,
for the magic of teaching Simply Music to my beginning students and seeing the magic happen right before my eyes – who would ever have thought students could learn so easily and effortlessly?
for the blessing of music which weaves through my life every day from the time I get up until I lay my head down each night,
for my Lord Jesus Christ – Soli Deo Gloria!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my family and friends! May this day be filled with love, laughter, and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime!

Recently, a Kindermusik colleague of mine, Michelle Jacques of Canada, flew to South Africa for a joint venture between Kindermusik International and Kindermusik educators in South Africa in an Outreach program that takes Kindermusik into the orphanages there.   These videos are from some of the classes that she participated in.  Watch and see the beauty of the children, hear their laughter and giggles, and you will realize that music is truly the universal language.  Enjoy!  🙂

And, from the Our Time unit “Fiddle Dee Dee” that we will enjoy next semester, beginning in January, watch the children learn American Sign Language through music.  🙂
